What is charity poker?

Charity poker is a fun & rewarding way to raise money for non-profit organizations.

Charitable foundations and organizations worldwide need our support. Playing poker is a fun way to support them while also having a chance to win money if you place "in the money" during a tournament.

When you play regular poker tournaments at a casino the casino makes all of their money from what is called "The Rake".  Let's say it cost $100 to buy-in to a tournament and the rake is 20%.  The casino would make $20 and the other $80 would go into the pot to be won by the top players in the tournament.

In charity poker almost all of "The Rake" will go to a specific charity, and the poker room will only keep a small portion to offset the costs of paying waitresses, dealers, or other costs. Usually no more than 20% of the rake would be kept with 80% or more going to a charity.

The payout normally is split up by the top 15%. In a 20 person tournament it would be the top 3 people, in a 27 person tourney it would be the top 4 people, in a 100 person tourney it would be 15 people, and so on. The majority of the money goes to the overall winner, and get smaller for the remaining winners.

What is Robin Hood Poker and how does it differ from regular charity poker?

1. RHP players pledge to give a minimum of 20% of their tournament winnings to a specific charitable foundation. Some RHP players will give 100% of their winnings to their favorite charity.

2. When an RHP player plays in a charity poker tournament they may raise money for multiple causes.  Example: RHP player Jack Slater buys into a $25 tournament at Hot Rod's charity poker room in Jackson, Michigan. $4 will go to the local charity for Motts Children's hospital, $1 will go to Hot Rod's, and $20 will go to the pool of money to be won by the top 15% of players in tourney.  Let's say Jack does well and wins the tournament and first place pays $500.  Jack has already pledged to give 20% of his winnings to the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST). Jack has raised $4 for Motts Childrens Hospital and $100 for FAST.  Leaving himself $400 to pay for his future buy-ins to tournaments.

3. RHP players raise money for charity even if they don't play in a charity poker room. Go to any Las Vegas Casino or the local casino near you and play in any poker tournament and pledge to give at least 20% of your winnings to your favorite charity.

Who do I contact to let them know I want to give X% to Y Charity?

ANSWER: Nobody.  RHP is based off integrity with yourself.  If you tell yourself you are going to give 50% of your winnings to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and you win a pot of $1,000 you better give $500 to CFF or you will have to live with the guilt of not doing so.  However, some RHP players will Tweet a public pledge on Twitter or post it on Facebook or Google Plus as a way to be held accountable if they win money in the tournament. "Hey Jack I heard you won $25,000 last night at Bellagios....good job! Did you give your 20% to American Cancer Society like you tweeted you would?"

I want to wear RHP clothing where can I buy RHP products?

ANSWER: Currently RHP does not carry any products, but we may offer some items such as t-shirts, hats, poker chips, or playing cards in the future.
